On the Road: 4 California Cannabis Stores I Loved
We recently returned from our first official Flower & Freedom trip; a whirlwind west coast road trip in our VW Eurovan. Between attending a Hollywood party, thrown by Hollyweed North, going to the annual NCIA (National Cannabis Industry Association) conference, meeting with our new Oakland based design agency Aalchemy, and visiting the formidable Redwood National Forest, we managed to visit four very unique California dispensaries, everything with something different to offer! There are over 1000 dispensaries in California, so this doesn’t even scratch the surface, but we scoured Leafly carefully in each city to find these stores and definitely hit some gems, check them out below, and let us know which ones we should visit next time we’re in Cali!
We were excited to visit Topikal CBD to check out all the best CBD products in California. In fact, industrial hemp based CBD is legal in all 50 states so Topikal carries brands from around the country, all of which can be shipped within the US. This also means you don’t require a California medical license to shop there, and there’s no lengthy membership form to fill out. While the outside of the store was nondescript, the interior was gorgeous – recently designed, a cross between nature themed elements and geometric accents. We picked up a CBD transdermal patch from Mary’s Nutritionals and passion fruit CBD vape juice from Active CBD. While the effects of CBD are much more subtle than THC, both CBD products are meant to provide effects over time, with vape juice aimed at overall relief, and the transdermal patch meant to provide pain relief in a targeted area. (Watch for our reviews in an upcoming post!) New visitors to Topikal also receive a complimentary bath bomb, we can’t wait to try ours! Follow Topikal on Instagram @topikal.cbd. #LetsHealTogether
Taking the scenic route up the coast, we stopped in Malibu to check out the original Malibu dispensary, 99 Hightide Collective, which was recommended to us on more than one occasion. The 99 Hightide Collective is just south of the world famous Malibu Pier and surf rider beach. Before even entering into the members only area, we loved the vibe of the place, described as a “transformational boutique, carrying Malibu locally created art, crystals, healing elixirs, visionary art, fashion, superfood products and other higher consciousness products.” They also offer complimentary services such as massage, sound healing, breathwork and Reiki in their “healing cove.” (They had us at “take a break and lie down on our grounding mat!”) Inside the member’s area, which had a distinct under-the-sea feel, there is an extensive collection of locally grown strains, topicals, tinctures, edibles (with gluten free options!), and a CBD only shelf. The staff member that helped us was very knowledgeable, and able to break down many options when we were indecisive about which tincture to try! We settled on a THCA tincture from LoveGrown and a Whoopi & Maya’s Medical Cannabis THC Raw Cacao both of which we’re excited to try! (Watch for our upcoming post on THCA!) After our conference in Oakland, we stopped at a Harvest Shop in San Fransisco (Harvest on Geary) before heading up to take some shots of the Golden Gate Bridge (we are tourists after all!) We love this place, where you can easily check in on an iPad, and browse through hundreds of curated products on shelves, rather than peering at them through glass or behind a counter. Another Harvest claim to fame is their gorgeous member only lounges, where you can smoke and vape, and which offer storage options, table services, state-of-the-art air filtration, wifi and workstations, and member only events. Harvest also hosts farmer’s markets twice a month, where members can get to know local growers and producers. Some of our fave finds here included the Whoopi & Maya Lavender Bath Soak, Kinslips (10mg CBD sublingual strips), the HMBLDT dose pen in Calm, the Treatwell 20-1 CBD/THC tincture, the Défoncé chocolate bar in mint, and a tin of Beboe Sativa Blend Pastilles. Our last dispensary stop on our way back up the Cali coast was Emerald Pharms in Mendocino County, located on a 12-acre permaculture oasis, a “solar-powered medical marijuana dispensary and resource center that specializes in regional heirloom genetics.” The property, which also houses the Solar Living Institute, is fully powered by on site solar panels, and a great patio lounge area overlooks gardens and ponds, where we stopped for a picnic lunch. We enjoyed pursuing the great selection of many NorCal brands including edibles, topicals, tinctures, sublingual sprays, gel caps, and strain-specific vape oil cartridges. Faves include the Humboldt Harvest CBD Macaroons (in raspberry, lemon, cacao and walnut, 20 mg per serving), and the Care By Design Sublingual Spray (8:1 CBD/THC). We were also excited to pick up one of our fave finds on the trip, the BOSM Breast Health Oil, which contains 270 mg of THC per jar, and is said to “rejuvenates breast tissue and triggers the natural cellular detoxification process.” (And we’ll admit it, we LOVE the packaging.) We would definitely visit this location again, and make sure to have more time to spend relaxing on the grounds and learning about solar powered cannabis!
